Rebooting Habits: Devoting July to Becoming Better Than Before

pink cosmosHappy second half of the year!

I don’t know about you, but I think there’s something about the midpoint of the year that lends itself to new starts.

Most of us think about new starts in January, but I’m the type of person who needs to break a big job (like getting through a whole year) into smaller bites.

July not only marks the start of the second half of the calendar year, it’s also a time of more relaxed summer schedules, at least in the northern hemisphere.

If you’ve got kids at home, or returning home from college, the transition from school to summer vacation is always discombobulating (that’s my word and I’m sticking to it).

But most of us have settled in to the new groove by July.

That new and less structured groove, though, can wreak havoc on our productivity and personal goals.

I know that’s been the case for me, even more so since our house has been riddled with pneumonia germs for the past ten days. To follow up on last week’s post, I did, indeed, end up on antibiotics along with my eldest son. I can happily report, however, that our youngest avoided the bug and is safely launched on his month-long wilderness trek. Yay!

Now that July is here, it feels like the perfect time for a reboot.

I just finished reading Gretchen Rubin’s Better Than Before: Mastering the Habits of Our Everyday Lives. You may be familiar with Gretchen’s New York Times bestseller The Happiness Project, which inspired me to start blogging three years ago.

In Better Than Before, Gretchen applies her impeccable research skills (she’s a former lawyer) and accessible writing style (shocking, since she’s a former lawyer) to the question of how we use habits to change our lives.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to the question, of course.

So over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing what I’ve learned from Better Than Before, with examples of how I’m applying it to my own life.

Just a couple of hints…

I’ve lost over ten pounds since starting the book on Memorial Day weekend, I’ve forgiven my husband for something that’s bothered me almost daily for twenty years, and a friend and I have paired up to keep us both on track with a soul-feeding habit.

Stay tuned! And pick up the book if you want to follow along!
