Gumption. It’s a word I hadn’t used much in my personal discourse.
It’s a word I would have considered to be old fashioned, spoken only by old wrinkled men. I have no idea why.
But gumption is my new favorite word, ever since I saw a young, talented poet’s performance at the Omega Women’s Leadership Center’s Women in Power retreat.
Being Bold was the theme of the retreat, making Kerri Lowe’s “When I Have Gumption” the perfect contribution.
Kerri told me afterwards that it was her first time performing the piece in front of a big audience. She nailed it. And she had to be about the youngest person there in a crowd of 400 people. The girl’s got gumption.
I guarantee that you’ll be blown away by this video. Listen carefully, whether you are a woman or a man, a daughter or a son, a sister or a brother. We all have something to learn from this gifted, inspiring young woman, who has channeled a history of sexual abuse and eating disorders into this amazing piece of art.
From Kerri’s website:
“My name is Kerri Lowe – but you can call me kaylo. KAYLO stands for Keep All Young Loves Open – and for me, it’s more than a nickname, it’s a philosophy of living.
KAYLO is the person I am when I like myself the best. Curious & brave. Honest & fierce.
Playful. Passionate. Articulate.
KAYLO represents the spirit of you & me & every woman who believes that she can change the world with her words.”
