Some Highlights from South Africa’s Kirstenbosch National Botanic Garden

by | April 20, 2017 | Mindful Gardening, Photography

Hi everyone!

We returned from South Africa yesterday. What an amazing journey! Several blog posts will come out that adventure eventually. Today, though, as I catch up from being away for almost two weeks, I’ll simply share with you a few images I brought home from my too-short visit to the Kirstenbosch National Botanic Garden in Cape Town.

We were limited to just a couple of hours, so I was only able to explore a small slice of the world renowned collection of gardens. After the mountain climbing, hiking, canoeing, canyoneering, and animal viewing that dominated the rest of the trip (and I’m not even including the shark cage diving and highest bungy jump in the world activities that I watched my husband and sons partake in), the stillness and abundance of exquisite plant life that Kirstenbosch offered was just what I needed. We were there the day after Easter, a national holiday, and the lawns were filled with picnic parties, children running barefoot through the grass, and couples sipping wine while watching the sun go down. Bucolic scenes all around.  If you ever have the opportunity to visit South Africa, make sure to include a visit Kirstenbosch!

Sorry the images are not labeled with botanic names. I can dig them up if you’re interested! April is fall in South Africa, so blooms were most prevalent in the heath and protea displays (the final image shows the King Protea, South Africa’s national flower — cool, huh??). Let me know what your favorites are! I’d also love to hear about your own adventures in South Africa if you’ve been lucky enough to visit!
