Visiting the lotus ponds at Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens in Washington, DC, has become an annual pilgrimage for me. My hilly suburban plot in northern Virginia doesn’t lend itself to water gardening, which makes this 12-acre marshland botanic garden that much more of a treasure.
The lotus aligns closely with my mission to inspire mindfulness. Across cultures, lotus flowers are associated with resilience, spiritual awakening, enlightenment, and creation.
Let me know what you think of the new additions to my collection! You can learn more about how I interpreted the essence of each of my subjects in my new Lotus and Water Lilies gallery at damselwingsphotography.com.
My hope is that my work inspires you to be like the lotus — emerging from muddy waters resilient, creative, and awake to the wonders of life.

Martha..Thank you for sharing the beauty of these lotus blossoms. They are exquisite! While I grew up in this area, I have never seen these amazing blossoms, but, with your photos, I am there! I wonder, with so many of them, if there is a fragrance? Wouldn’t that be joy beyond belief!
Many thanks for sharing your gifts,
Debbie
Martha Brettschneider says
Thanks for your kind words, Debbie. The Yellow Lotus (an American native), does have a gentle fragrance. Kenilworth is rich with sensory experience — so many layers of fragrance, visuals, and wildlife sounds. It’s a wonderful space for mindfulness practice. Hope you can make it someday! With gratitude, Martha

Dear Martha,
Am kinda in the doldrums today, can’t shake it off with exercise or a nap, but I found your pictures so refreshing.
I have lived in this area since 1985 and I have never been to Kenilworth Gardens! I made a date with my daughter on Aug. 8 to visit.
thank you, Lilian
