Just like the adults in their lives, kids need tools to regulate their stress levels and navigate big emotions. That’s why I’m so excited to share this guest post from Joe Skoff, the producer behind Mello, a new meditation podcast designed for kids. Having listened to all of the delightful episodes myself, I can attest that they are just as engaging and calming for grown-ups.
Hey there, dreamers, deep breathers, and adventurers!
My name is Joe Skoff, and I’m the producer behind Mello, a new meditation podcast for kids. The idea behind our show is simple: we make meditations based on curious questions kids send us. Through these audio journeys, kids and parents alike practice breathing techniques, imagination, and emotional regulation.
We came up with the idea after Cassie (the incredible voice of Mello) couldn’t get her kids to sleep with traditional podcasts. Stories about unicorns going to cloud island were a tad boring, and traditional meditations for adults were a bit too spare.
They begged for meditations inspired by their own wacky questions:
- What’s a day like for a platypus?
- What’s it like inside a cow’s tummy?
- How are crayons made?
When Cassie shared these ideas with me, we quickly produced one meditation…then another…then another, until it became our favorite part of the week.
We realized that this method of creating meditations–specifically, catering to real-world questions kids have and leaning into their interests–could inspire young people to meditate earlier in life.
Being a part of Martha’s community, each of you (including my mom! Hi Laura!) can feel the tangible benefits of meditation. I myself got into the practice relatively early (high school) and it’s been one of the best decisions of my life. But why wait until high school?
Our mission is to change the way we teach mindfulness to children. We want to be a resource that parents and their children use before bed, during a hard moment, or when they get a free couple of minutes in their day. We want to make our meditations so enjoyable, so filled with love and curiosity and wonder, that kids will be excited to meditate.
We hope you’ll take a moment to listen to our episodes and share them with someone in your life. And please, if you have any ideas about how to make meditation more enjoyable for kids, or just want to connect, email us at hello@mellopodcasts.com.
Thank you for your time!
