Happy Independence Day, friends.
It occurred to me this morning, as I was mulling over mixed feelings about the complexity of this American holiday, that the aspiration of liberty is the real message of the day. Liberty has more layers than an onion.
Some of my liberties come from sheer luck – being born here, white, and into a family with enough resources to keep me safe and healthy. I am grateful for these circumstances, but don’t attach “pride” to what I didn’t accomplish on my own.
What I do feel good about is the conscious action I have taken to liberate myself from harmful thinking patterns that constrained my own growth and what I could contribute to the world. I feel even better about sharing this work with people who are also committed to inner work that supports outer service. “Outer service” can be as basic as sharing your positive energy with the world.
So to those of you who have learned how to call out the lies of your Judge (Judge of self, of others, and of circumstances) and your nasty accomplice saboteurs — the inner voices that convince us we’re not enough, or that everyone else is the problem — I celebrate your liberation work! These efforts clear the path to Sage independence and full empowerment to show up for your life as the best version of yourself right up to your final frame.
That’s something to be truly proud of this Independence Day. May the holiday’s energy power you up to continue your growth journey. The more light we shine on what’s holding us back with each saboteur interception, each PQ rep, and each celebration of that noticing, the weaker that cast of characters becomes.
Peel back one layer of that onion and you find another thing you didn’t choose – another old fear, another story still running the show. Keep peeling. That’s the work. And unlike an onion, this kind of peeling doesn’t leave you in tears: it leaves you freer than you started.
