My favorite place during meditation is the space between breaths.
When you sit in silence, even the breath can sound loud. The space between breaths is utterly still, but somehow deeply expansive as well. It reminds me of being on a swing, when you reach the highest point and hover just for an instant before gravity pulls you back down.
The space between breaths is a place of great potential. You know the next breath is coming, but if you’re paying close enough attention and allow yourself to just sink into it, there’s a restfulness in that space between breaths that is deeply grounding and restorative. Mindfulness trains us to absorb the energy in that space and turn toward the next breath with an open, curious mindset.
This week, nestled between Thanksgiving and the holidays of lights (in my family this includes Chanukah and Christmas), feels like that space between breaths
Widening the frame further, these final weeks of the year also feel like that space between breaths. Though the days are full and are by no means “still,” there is a sense of impending transition and potential.
I’m using this space to get myself organized for next year, which will be a busy one for me (stay tuned). One upcoming change is that I will be dividing my writing output between this blog and my new photography website. While mindfulness is at the heart of all of my work, you may not be interested in receiving wall art updates and marketing, and my photography followers may not be interested in receiving mindfulness blogs and program offerings.
Some of you already responded to a previous post about this and signed up for the Damselwings Photography subscriber list. I’m putting it out there again since my new system will begin officially in January. Between the two sites, there will still be an average of one post per week, but the photography subscribers will also receive special offers and sale information. (I just put up an offer there for a drawing for a free print of your choice, as just one example.) My mindfulness reader circle subscribers will receive about two blog posts a month and updates on workshops, speaking engagements, and other non-photography offerings.
So I’m creating a little bit of space between these two business lines, if you will, in an effort to give me more clarity and to give you a choice in what you want to receive from me. If you’re all in for every facet of the Damselwings journey, make sure you’re on both subscriber lists!
If you haven’t done so already and would like to subscribe to my Damselwings Photography Circle, please visit https://www.damselwingsphotography.com/
Wishing you a joyous, intention-driven, and gratitude-filled December!
