Spring Cleaning? Don’t Forget Meditation

by | March 21, 2026 | Meditation, Mindfulness, Workshop

I don’t know if this is just a female thing, but my internal “clean, clear, declutter” lever mysteriously flips on every March. It feels so primordial, especially when I hear my girlfriends and sisters mention their own spring cleaning compulsions.

This year I have leaned into the calling with particular attention – intensity, even – because we are hosting my father-in-law’s 90th birthday party at our home a week from now. I’m using the opportunity as an inspiring motivator for long-needed fixes and refreshers.

As I sat for my meditation practice this morning, the home improvement and party planning to-do list thoughts streamed in. I wasn’t surprised, and I didn’t resist. My only job was to notice each distraction and return my attention to my chosen focal point – in this case, my breath – over and over (and over!) again.

I released each thought with a gentle “not now” and let it float downstream. In the process, I rinsed away mental detritus and sticky thought cobwebs. I stepped into my day with sparkling clarity on where to direct my energy, grateful for the clean slate that another day of life offers.
